Bangladesh is bordered by India on the east, west and north and by the Bay of Bengal on the south. There is also a small strip of frontier with Burma on the southastern edge. The land is a deltaic plain with a network of numerous rivers and canals. Bangladesh is a riverine nation situated in the middle of the ganges delta. Mostly flat, there are a few hilly areas in the southeast and in the northeast.
   Bangladesh has a tropical monsoon-type climate, with a hot and rainy summer and a pronounced dry season in the cooler months. January is the coolest month of the year. The climate of Bangladesh is one of the wettest in the world.
   The principal resources of Bangladesh are the fertile soils of the delta region, the long growing season and the heavy rainfall suitably distributed over the year for growing rice and jute. Although minerals have traditionally been economically unimportant, the country has large reserves of natural gas and some petrol deposits. Natural gas is piped into Dhaka and Chittagong for industrial use. There are also large deposits of low-grade coal, mined at Jamalpur.
   The literacy rate in Bangladesh is very low, with significant disparity between female and male literacy rate.
   There are 11 operational airports in Bangladesh. Biman is the national flag carrier airline.
