CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS
The Chittagong Hill Tracts are spread over an area of approximately 13, 180 kilometer square. It meets with the borders of India and Myanmar. A Hill tract is situated in the south eastern part of BANGLADESH. They are bordered with India and Myanmar. Till the year 1984, it was a single and individual district. After than that it was subdivided into three individual districts, these districts are: Khagrachari, Bandarban and Rangamati.According to topography, this hill tract is the only intensive area in the entire Bangladesh.
Population and Religion
Currently the population ranges from 1 million to 1.5 million. Among these approximately 50% are the tribal and they following Theravada Buddhism. While 45% are the Muslim Bengali. Minority are Hindu, Christians and Animist. Jumma is the word that is used for the tribal people of this Hill Tract. These people include Chakma, Marma, Tenchungya, Chak, Mru,Tripura, Bawm, Murung, Khyang, Lushai, Assammese, Gurkha, Khumi and Santal.
