President of Pakistan

  

The position of President of Pakistan has traditionally been one of a figurehead, with actual powers lying with the prime minister. The current constitution gives the President reserve powers - subject to Supreme Court approval or veto - to dissolve the National Assembly of Pakistan, triggering new elections, and thereby to dismiss the Prime Minister.

 

President of Pakistan means the Head of the state of Pakistan and in Urdu language it is called as the Sadr-e-Mumlikat, President runs all the administrative affairs of the state of Pakistan. In Pakistan, parliamentary government system exists. Constitutionally, President of Pakistan is elected for five-years by the Electoral College. The Electoral College consists of Senate, National Assembly and the provincial assemblies of Pakistan.President of Pakistan can not hold the charge of the office more than two times. President of Pakistan is answerable before the parliament and president can be thrown out of the office by the majority of two-third votes of the parliamentarians in case of any bad-governess. Impeachment of president can also be another option in case of the above mentioned act. Alterations and amendments in constitution of Pakistan have always been the favorite act of Pakistani presidents, Military interruption have also been the part of Pakistani political history. So many times presidents of Pakistan dissolve the national assembly and currently the president of Pakistan has the same right to dissolve the national assembly. President of Pakistan also has got the power and authority to elect the heads of the Army, Air Force and Navy and president is a head of National Security Council of Pakistan.

 

Presidency History

 

In earlier history, right after the partition Pakistan followed the British constitution to run the government then in the year 1956, first constitution of Pakistan was proposed and established and Pakistan became a Republic state. It was decided that the head of the state would be the President instead of the Queen and Governor General. Iskandar Mirza was the first president and last governor general of Pakistan. Later in the year 1958, Martial law was declared in Pakistan by Iskandar Mirza. Later history tells that Ayub Khan thrown out Iskandar Mirza and he himself declared the president of Pakistan. Amendments were done in the constitution of Pakistan and according to the new alterations president was declared as the head of the state. According to new alterations, the right to select and elect the president of Pakistan was given to the people of Pakistan. At that time in 1963, Ayub Khan defeated Ftaima Jinnah in the presidential elections; Fatima Jinnah was the youngest sister of Quaid-e-Azam. Since 1963, Ayub Khan ruled Pakistan as a president later in the year 1969, Yahya khan got the presidency and he failed to run the good governess and 1071, East Pakistan got apart from the Pakistan and Pakistan divided into two parts. After that miss-happening Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto got the office of president. He decided to formulate the new constitution of Pakistan that was completed in the year 1973. According to the new constitution all the power was given to the Prime minister of Pakistan. According to the new selection criteria, the right to select and elect the president was given to the National Assembly of Pakistan. Once again in the year 1977, martial law was declared in Pakistan and Bhutto was imprisoned on several accuses. General Zia-Ul-Haq declared martial law and became the Chief Executive of Pakistan. New amendments were done in the constitution of Pakistan by General Zia ul Haq and according to the new alterations again president got the power of the head of the state. In 1988, Zia ul Haq passed away in an air crash, after his demise all the superior powers was regained by the Prime minister of Pakistan. The powers were retained by the president office till the year 1997. In the year 1999, General Pervez Musharaf declared martial law in Pakistan and he thrown out the prime minister of Pakistan from his office. Musharaf declared himself as a Chief Executive of Pakistan. Alterations were done in the constitution of Pakistan and then again presidency got all the powers. Musharaf elected himself as a president of Pakistan through so-called parliament election. In 2007, Musharaf left the power as a head of the military and he elected by the national assembly as a president of Pakistan. Musharraf declared emergency in Pakistan to elect himself as a president and right after his election he lifted the emergency. After the elections of 2008, Pressure on Musharaf's government was increased and people of Pakistan wanted to throw out Musharaf and Musharraf signed a deal with the Late Benazir Bhutto to resign as the General of Pakistan. Finallly the day came when Musharraf resigned as a president of Pakistan and Asif Ali Zardar, who is the Co-Chairman of PPP got the Office of president by National assembly election.
