Vilnius University is not only the oldest university in the Baltic state but also it is one of the oldest universities in Northern region of Eastern Europe. Vilnius University is formerly known as the Vilnius State University. It was established in 1579. It is also the biggest University in Lithuania. The university has a number of semi-autonomous institutes. There are also several study and research centers at Vilnius University.Vilnius University functioning for a long time as the school of higher learning in Lithuania. It was a preserver of cultural and scientific traditions, and has played a significant part in the cultural life not only of Lithuania, but the neighboring countries as well. The Vilnius University is a unique witness to the history of the Lithuanian state. During more than four centuries of its existence, the university of Vilnius has seen periods of growth and decline, revival and closure. Currently there are more than 22, 000 students studying at this university.
